Credit Repair for California Residents

From Los Angeles to Sacramento, we work with California residents online. Here is what California's credit picture looks like, what California law gives you, and how we help.

100% online, wherever you live in California. No office visits, nothing to mail.

Credit Phoenix is an online, nationwide credit repair company that works with California residents. We review your reports from all three bureaus, challenge items that are inaccurate, unverifiable or outdated under the Fair Credit Reporting Act, and track every response. California gives you until midnight of the fifth working day after you sign to cancel a credit repair contract, and federal law gives you three business days.

What California's credit numbers look like

California sits above the national average on credit scores and files fewer credit reporting and debt collection complaints per person than the country as a whole. The source sits next to each figure.

Average FICO Score721 in September 2025 (21 of 51 incl. D.C.; 722 a year earlier; national average 713)Experian, average FICO Score by state
Complaints to the CFPB about credit reporting (2025)440,281 from California residents, about 111.7 per 10,000 people (national rate 140.1 per 10,000)CFPB Consumer Complaint Database
Complaints to the CFPB about debt collection (2025)23,799 from California residents, about 6.0 per 10,000 people (national rate 8.2 per 10,000)CFPB Consumer Complaint Database

None of this means your report is accurate. The Federal Trade Commission's own study found that about one in five consumers had an error on at least one credit report, and one in 20 had an error big enough to change the price of credit (FTC, 2013). The first step is always finding out what is on your reports.

Your rights under California law

Federal law (the Fair Credit Reporting Act and the Credit Repair Organizations Act) applies in every state. Here is what applies to you in California.

California lawWhat it means for youSource
California Credit Services Act, Civil Code 1789.10 to 1789.26Before you sign, the company must give you a written information statement. The contract must be in writing, describe the services, and give an estimated time of no more than 180 days. You can cancel before midnight on the fifth working day after you sign, and any payment must be returned within 15 days. A consumer can recover at least the amount paid, plus attorney's fees and costs, and punitive damages may be awarded.Cal. Civ. Code 1789.14, 1789.16, 1789.21
Federal Credit Repair Organizations ActAny credit repair contract must be in writing, you can cancel it until midnight of the third business day after signing, and a company may not charge you for a service before that service is fully performed.15 U.S.C. 1679b, 1679e
Federal Fair Debt Collection Practices ActA debt collector may not use any false, deceptive or misleading statement to collect a debt. Unless you agree otherwise, the law treats the hours after 8 a.m. and before 9 p.m. your local time as the convenient ones for contacting you, and collection activity cannot overshadow your right to dispute the debt within 30 days of the first notice.15 U.S.C. 1692c, 1692e, 1692g
Statute of limitations on debt, Cal. Code Civ. Proc. 337A creditor generally has four years to sue on a written contract and four years on a book account or an open and current account. An old debt can still appear on your report for up to seven years, and a lawsuit filed after the deadline can be defended, but only if you respond.Cal. Code Civ. Proc. 337

How Credit Phoenix works with California residents

  1. Free assessment. You book a call, we look at your situation and tell you honestly whether credit repair makes sense for you. If it does not, we say so.
  2. Review of all three reports. We go through Equifax, Experian and TransUnion line by line and flag items that look inaccurate, unverifiable or outdated.
  3. Challenges. We send the challenges, with the evidence, to the bureaus and to the companies that reported the items. Under the FCRA they generally have 30 days to investigate and answer.
  4. Tracking and next rounds. You see every response in your client portal. Items that come back verified get a closer look, and we tell you what we can and cannot challenge.

Everything happens online and by phone, so it works the same in San Diego as it does in Fresno. We serve clients nationwide, 100% online; we do not have a California office.

Questions California residents ask us

Is credit repair legal in California?

Yes. California regulates credit services organizations under the Credit Services Act, and federal law regulates them under the Credit Repair Organizations Act. Both laws exist to protect you: written contracts, a cancellation right, and no promises of results.

How long does credit repair take in California?

There is no fixed answer and anyone who gives you one is guessing. The bureaus generally have 30 days to answer each challenge under the FCRA, and most files take more than one round. What we can promise is that you will see every response as it comes in.

Can I cancel if I change my mind?

Yes. California law lets you cancel before midnight on the fifth working day after you sign, and federal law gives you three business days. The agreement you sign must explain how to cancel.

What does it cost?

Our plans and what each one includes are on our pricing page. You can start with a free assessment, and there is no charge for it.
