Plain-English definitions

  • Utilization: your card balances divided by your card limits. The second biggest score factor.
  • Charge-off: a debt the creditor wrote off as unlikely to be paid. Still collectible, still reportable.
  • Collection: a debt handed to or bought by a collection agency, reported as its own item.
  • Hard inquiry: a credit check from an application. Small, temporary score impact; visible two years.
  • Dispute: your legal request that a bureau verify or remove an item, with a 30 to 45 day investigation deadline.
  • Pay for delete: negotiating a collection payment in exchange for removal, agreed in writing before paying.
  • Goodwill letter: asking a creditor to forgive an isolated late payment on an otherwise clean account.
  • Personal guarantee: your personal promise behind a business debt if the business cannot pay.
  • Paydex: Dun & Bradstreet's 0-100 business payment score. 80 = pays on time.
  • Net-30: vendor terms giving 30 days to pay. The reporting ones build business credit.
